Heart Valve
There is a widely spread interest in having prosthesis made with biological tissues for valve replacements in chirurgical treatment of heart diseases. These valves have biophysical properties and are geometrically similar to the healthy human valve, which eliminates stagnations and turbulences in the central blood flow that, in turn, minimizes the tromboembolism risk and avoids permanent use of anticoagulants during postsurgery period.
At the same time, being biological and not needing anticoagulants, these valves do allow women pregnancy, which mechanical valves do not. Furthermore, H.V.P.® bioprotheses porcine valve is treated with a glutaraldehyde solution granting high stability and proper distribution of collagen fibers, which allows overcoming problems caused by late faults due to tissue alterations. This fact has determined that the porcine valve treated with glutaraldehyde has shown enough advantages through a period already exceeding fifteen years.
Porcine bioprotheses are highly reliable as there is no risk of sudden death due to valve dysfunction. All this plus the fact that its cost is much less than implanting with mechanical valves explains why 45% of all implants in the world are made with biological valves.
